doolhof wine estate, is looking to appoint a passionate, curious and focused viticulturist to the team. the goal of this appointment is to plan, supervise and coordinate the growing of selected grape varieties for the production of quality wine grapes. you will hold a bachelors degree in viticulture/oenology and keep abreast of innovation & change within the field of grape farming.

typical duties
• production of grapes under a wide variety of natural conditions including preparation of the land, planting, trellising, pruning, monitoring and controlling of pests and diseases, fertilizing, irrigation and canopy management
• design and implement pest and disease control programs following pest management practices and a sustainable farming approach
• use plant, climate and soil moisture monitoring equipment for scheduling irrigation and modelling grapevine shape/phrenology
• diagnose and solve viticulture problems – this will include seasonal, geographical & strategic issues.
• collect, organize and report viticulture data to support farming and marketing decisions
• direct and supervise vineyard staff
• provide feedback and guidance to wine farmers/vineyard managers to yield the best results
• direct contact with the winemaker to communicate grape characteristics needed to begin the winemaking process
• research & development – stay educated on best practice, trends & quality
• sourcing of grapes, management of external vineyards
• responsibility for vineyard machinery, ie. spray pumps, tractors & pruning equipment

3 – 5 years applicable experience, interested in agriculture, good analytical and problem-solving skills, able to make accurate observations, good communication and interpersonal skills, good organisational skills, flexibility and adaptability, enjoy outdoor work
